Formerly known as Bombay, Mumbai is the capital city of the state of Maharashtra in India. The most populous city of the country with a population of approximately 15 million, it is the second most populous city of the world. The neighboring urban areas include the smaller cities of Navi Mumbai and Thane and it lies on the western coast of the country. Comprising of a deep natural harbor, it was named an Alpha world city.
